People gathered Saturday in DC at the Lincoln Memorial as part of an event that Glenn Beck was hosting. The rally was a hybrid neocon pep rally/religious revival, consisting of pictures on a giant TV screen of famous moments from American history, along with inspirational music, waving flags, and talk of destiny and God from a loudmouth Fox News preacher who hides the insincerity in his eyes behind a thick layer of glasses while weeping in breathy sobs to mask his laughter.

Make Sure the Bunker is Well Stocked

Robert Herz was forced to resign from his job as as chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) because he insisted that the banks assign a fair value to their assets. That’s not what you’ll read in the papers, but it’s true just the same. Herz was a major proponent of mark-to-market accounting, a simple means of determining the value of a bond or security by comparing the price of similar assets sold at market. In other words, Herz is a defender of universally-accepted accounting principles, which is why he was terminated, er, I mean, resigned. According to the Wall Street Journal:

“A new front has opened up in the war over mark-to-market accounting. Suddenly banks find themselves with an unexpected advantage in the fight over how they should value their vast holdings of financial instruments

Glenn Beck’s Big Lie: Will the real Glenn Beck please stand up?

While Glenn Beck, corporate media personality, and Sarah Palin wave the American Flag in Washington, D.C. to “restore honor” to “this great nation”, I ponder the real motives behind the hysteria.

First, Beck claimed that he would use the rally to “reclaim” the civil rights movement.  Reverend Al Sharpton on Fox News  last night, stated “Beck didn’t do what he said..he didn’t even mention civil rights” at his rally. Sharpton intensely criticized Glenn Beck for his apparent “hijacking” of the “hallowed” ground where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his historic “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963.

Regardless, I must question the veracity of anything presented on Fox News since a News Corps, Inc. (Fox News parent company) majority stock holder is apparently funding the Ground Zero Mosque Imam, while failing to mention the connection during their relentless campaign to stir the proverbial pot of controversy.  I guess they have moved on to a “new” controversy, apparently dissatisfied with promoting religious intolerance, inciting bigotry and hatred between whites and blacks.

Obama, Bloomberg Talk Economy Over Golf

Mayor Bloomberg flew up to Martha’s Vineyard after this morning’s regular radio appearance to play a round of golf and talk about the economy with President Obama, we now hear…

“You golf, don’t you?”

Update from the White House pool reporter: “POTUS is golfing with Mayor Bloomberg today, and they prefaced their game with a 15-minute discussion of the economy in the clubhouse at the Vineyard Golf Club. Seeking more details. CBS’s Mark Knoller, hailed by many including the WH for his command of presidential data, says the two men have not golfed together before. After their conversation they headed to the driving range, and then the links. Also in the foursome: Vernon Jordan and trip director Marvin Nicholson.”

Update 2: “The President and Mayor Bloomberg took the opportunity to discuss plans for short- and long-term economic growth at a pivotal point in our recovery,” said White House spokesman Reid Cherlin. POTUS invited the Mayor about a week ago. The mayor met POTUS at the golf club — he did not travel with him in the motorcade.”

Mexicans fear cartels are winning

There used to be a time when the municipality of San Fernando in north-eastern Mexico was known for farming, fishing and a quiet way of life. Today, it is associated with death.

This week, a young Ecuadorean with bullet holes through his shoulder and cheek told the story of how he and his travelling companions on their way to the US in search of work had been kidnapped in San Fernando by the Zetas, one of Mexico’s drug cartels.
